When you ask people what breed of dog they feel is best for a family with children, you will find a good percentage will smile and say, Golden Retrievers. Golden retrievers were not always known as a family companion or as the best dog for kids.

They were originally bred in England in the 1800s as a sporting dog to retrieve waterfowl. They were a breed developed from crossing the now extinct Tweed Spaniel, the Newfoundland dog and the Irish Setter. Hoping to create a loving, free spirited dog, the breeders of the Golden Retriever succeeded and many of the dogs were brought to North America in the 1890s. First renown for their bright copper colored coats, these dogs where quickly admired for their gentle demeanor and soulful expression. “Goldens” have become incredibly successful in major dog competitions world wide and have reached an astonishing height in popularity in the last decade. They are the breed of choice in endless movies and television shows and are depicted on anything from greeting cards to mouse pads.

Golden retrievers have one of the kindest temperaments of any breed of dog. They are a patient, easily trained, happy and fun loving dog, with big dark affectionate eyes that seem to smile at strangers and their owners alike. It is because of this great friendly personality that Goldens are considered the best dog for kids. This breed seems to be able to recognize the fragility of a new born and the endless energy of a five-year-old without any trouble. They are very rarely aggressive but can be protective of family and property.

Though Golden Retrievers are a large dog, once past their puppy years, they need very little exercise and are quite happy to lie in the sun at their owner’s feet, taking life at an easy pace. It is not uncommon to see photos of Golden Retrievers, eyes bright, tongue hanging out of a seemingly joyful smile, while being hugged around the neck by a small child. It is these photos that best display this breeds character, their eyes seem to look into the camera and say…”I love life!”
